Wonderland ACEOs by Vera Ma

About a month ago, I joined a giveaway contest hosted by Singaporean illustrator Vera Ma, more commonly known as Lemon Shortbread. I was pleasantly surprised when she contacted me on facebook during a boring internship afternoon announcing that I'd won a set of three Wonderland ACEOs :).

I am a big fan of Alice in Wonderland, and an even bigger fan of Vera's amazing pop-art style. You can imagine my excitement when I unpacked the ACEOs when they arrived! The endearing characters of Wonderland are given a psychedelic makeover with Vera's signature vibrant colours and cute faces! What makes the ACEOs even more special is that they are printed on felt with a white stitched border. I've never collected ACEOs myself, but this set of three- along with two extra cards Vera added to the parcel as a gift- make a wonderful first-time experience.

Internship Hiatus

I've been on a great deal of hiatuses this year, but I suppose that's a good thing, yes? Because that means real life has been eventful. Not working out the way I expected, maybe, but eventful nonetheless.
It may interest on or the other that I am interning at TBWA for 3 months (that's December to end of February next year). I've been here for two weeks now, and so far it's been a very learning experience, a sneak peak into the working world that was previously clandestine to me. I've met a lot of nice people, though I think my social awkwardness from years of being a recluse is now showing to be my Achille's heel. That being said, training from living frugally on campus has helped me to survive (lol).

Anyway, to all my other classmates who are now interning, good luck and stay healthy! Don't forget to drink lots of water and suck lots of mints, because the dry air in the office is akin to sandpaper to your poor throats. To everyone else, have a happy happy holiday season and see you soon!

Zesty Sudsy Saturday~!

Earlier this year my parents embarked on an epic Europe trip. Through the goodwill and love only parents have for their children, they returned with a bar of lemon soap for me, bought when they stopped in a Munich shopping centre. And it is by far the largest bar of soap I have ever owned. Seriously, compared to a Body Shop soap bar that weighs in at only 99g, this one is a whopping 135g. It's almost like holding a block of butter that happens to sud up when it comes into contact with water...and smells lemony. I suppose it's maybe because Europeans are just generally larger compared to Asians, and thus need larger soaps?

It tickles me that the soap is so big it can't fit in the soap dish, and just somehow balances precariously on. And when I accidentally dropped it I was surprised it did not crack the bathroom tiles XD. Despite its size the soap does not have an overpowering scent. Rather it is light and airy, so you leave the bathroom carrying just a whiff of lemon freshness about you :).

I think it's interesting how something so small could have such a big difference coming from the other side of the world. Just one of those little things that never cease to surprise. Happy Saturday, everyone!

Seeing The Sights

Hello all! It's been exactly a month since I returned from Global Classroom- time sure flies. The past weeks had me going on full steam trying to catch up with the rest of them. The month of Global Classroom was certainly stressful, but it had its rewards :) . For one thing, my group won overall best out of the four teams. Secondly, though we (Esmond and I) didn't get to visit all the events we wanted to, we still managed to go to several events for London Design Week. And best of all, we met so many wonderful people during our trip; new friends that made us fall in love with London all the more. Not to mention all the wonderful places we visited and the gorgeous weather! 

During the month, I frequently thought some events organized by the university were a bit of a chore, especially when we need to play the 'waiting' game with all the students who just don't ever come on time. And then there was the whole headache of group work. Still, you win some you lose some. And I had members on the team that did their work exceptionally well and made the job a tad easier. 

I'v learnt a lot from the trip, not just from the Global Classroom activities, but from going places and meeting new people and experiencing new things. Also, it may interest you that I walked more in that 5 weeks than I have in (possibly) half a year. But it was part and parcel of the experience; if someone asked me to do it all over again I would. But maybe with a lighter backpack.

Temporary Hiatus

Hello everyone,

Just wanna drop a line (or two) here to let you know I will be on a temporary hiatus of one month. I may post on and off if I find the time to, but there will be no Wallpaper Wednesdays for awhile. It's the beginning of the semester and it may interest you that I am now in London for my uni's Global Classroom session (yes, it's that thing all over again). I've just spent my first night here, and already I've been blessed to meet great people, wonderful weather, and a smooth journey. Here's hoping that keep up till I return to sunny Malaysia!

Let's Go To The Zoo!

 Early this year (during the long long semester break), I took a trip to the Melaka zoo with Esmond! The zoo just recently underwent a change of management (it was privatised after having being a government body), but honestly a lot of work still needs to be done. It was a quiet weekday when we went, and coincidentally the Chief Minister was there as well, due to a rather serious case that happened the day before. 

The zoo is the second largest in Malaysia, after the National Zoo. I found it a bit disappointing, though, because there were far more deer species than any other animal on exhibit. We didn't even see the flamingoes or the tigers D8. We did see a few large iguanas roaming the grounds freely, though. Large enough lizards to make us run screaming when they came too close. Haha.

Urban Abyss

 Last Thursday I had the chance to view a solo exhibition held by an ex-lecturer of mine, Mr Chee Meng! He appears to be an enigmatic, lost-in-his-own-world kinda lecturer on-campus, but do a Google search on him and he's actually one of the many successful traditional artists in Malaysia, with plenty of incredible artwork and experience woven into a belt :D. Urban Abyss is his second solo exhibition, featuring a combination of techniques and materials to produce large, layered artworks.

Many of us ex (and current) students came by to support him. The place was crowded with big smiles and familiar faces. It was almost like a get-together party!

Mr Chee Meng's artwork reminds me of Chinese nest boxes, or Matryoshka dolls because of its many many layers. One full image is overlayed by another, and yet another, until the completed work looks like a simple, one-layered painting with a fancy background. But upon closer inspection there is an entirely new world underneath the top white. Watching the process videos, I saw things I didn't notice at all when I first looked at the paintings.

He used acrylics on MDF, along with CNC laser cutting to create even more dimension. Another thing I found impressive was the shadows he added to the flat visuals, giving the illusion of depth. At first glance one would not be able to tell what was laser-cut and what was simply painted on!

Double Act

From the rocky beginnings of time... when lightning bickered with ground, the waves argued with solid stone. Tempers and glasses and boxes flew left, right and centre. It was a warzone!

But now the opposing forces have declared peace, the elements sighed and fell into the arms of the other. And today marks the second year of peace and fruitfulness! :D

 I was just rereading old conversations, and looking at old photos, and maaan have we changed XD. It's almost as if we went through a second growth spurt! Blossoming from awkward teenagers into lovely young man and woman. Certainly a tad abusive and vulgar, but lovely all the same :D. I mean, seriously, can't you tell how much we've aged over the course of just two years? We turned from this:

Well, okay. You get my drift. XD.

Anyway, a happy happy two year anniversary to Esmond! \ ^O^ /. The days have been perceptibly brighter and optimistic after I met you! My blog may have remained luridly red if we never got together! Our forces united, we shall rock the very foundations of the Earth! We were born to do great things, and ever greater things together! 8DD

On a side note: Crash-learning a new program is certainly not the way to go, especially when there are many things to be done. Worse still is at the height of it all, I de-stress by acting out affected scenes from the now popular Kiyomi/ Gwiyoumi in a futile attempt to act cute. I shall at least appropriate scene 2 for the day's festivities.

Bringing Classic Back : It's All In The Stars!

Hello and happy April! I promised to return after the Puma Social Evolution of Suede Party, and here I am! :D. It was a pretty happening event, by the looks of it. But I am not in any way a socialite so I hadn't a single clue of what to do. I think from most of my posts you have probably reached the conclusion that I am nothing but an introverted worm that likes nothing better than staying in the safety of homes, venturing out only when the urge comes. I can't imagine any better phrase to explain myself in the party than 'rusa masuk kampung'. Which, when translated for the benefit of the non-Malaysian readers, literally means 'a deer walking into a village'. For the first time, I'd like to add. Haha. 

Anyway, I went with lovely friends, so that made the experience ever so much sweeter. I'm glad that despite my deer-ness, I am still blessed with lovely friends to flock about with when I do :D. And to be honest, I think I overcame my initial shyness when I saw how my starry-glowwy-shoes were displayed:

If you went 'holy-shit-they-spelled-your-name-wrong' first, then, well. That's not the point. Haha. To be absolutely honest, I did not notice the spelling error until much later, which goes to show you how shocked of a grammar nazi they made of me. MY SHOES WERE IN A BOX! A BLACK BOX WITH BLACKLIGHT! To show off all its absolutely amazing glowy glory!!! It was just as well that the thumping bass was so loud over the speakers, as it drowned out my screams. Haha. I didn't win, but I felt so proud and justified that my design at least got to bask in its full potential, instead of mouldering away in a corner. 

I hope I will soon have more photos to share with everyone, but for now you will have to make do with these. I should've brought Deedee, but she'd have been pretty useless, what with the place being so dark. I'd have to bump the ISO up to noisily ridiculous levels. All in all, I had fun, the free flow of alcohol for VIPs went to my head, and I was glad I didn't bolt at the beginning when I got the collywobbles. Haha. Meant For Each Other

A few months ago, Esmond and I helped a good buddy out by being 'actors' to a short video clip assignment of his. It was a pretty interesting experience! I must say, it felt a bit odd at first, especially when we hit the day off with an argument scene and Esmond and I were far from angry. You can (and will) notice scenes of us with twitching lips, as if we were going to burst out laughing in the next frame.

The day of the shoot was very nice weather, with a bit of cool showers in the early afternoon and clear evening. There wasn't much of a sunset, though, which was a shame because Shakir (the good buddy, producer, primary cameraman and director) was hoping for brilliant back-lighting. 

Despite all the little hiccups, I think it was enjoyable and the video came out fab! Check it out, and try not to squirm at all the cutesy 'romantic' scenes. I know I did ;) .

Chewwy Afternoon

Happy Sunday! It's always so nice and cool in the first half of the day, but mid-afternoon the temperature just shoots up and the sun goes 'lalalala buuuuuurnnn!!! :D'. It's so annoying =3=.

Anyways, I was out adventuring yesterday. Due to the fact that I am overpriced-camera-less, I am now bringing Chewwy everywhere with me and taking random shots when I don't feel too lazy to take her out of my bag =P. I went to a little coffee shop for brunch first, and it's probably the first time I felt that I'd eat at the shop again even if I didn't like the food. The people there were interesting! Rarely have I been in a coffeeshop where everyone is hard at work, earning their daily bread, and yet all of them were chatting and laughing. For a bunch of middle aged working class they sure are a lively lot XD. But it gives you a nice, friendly feeling towards them all. Especially the way they treat everyone like friends, customers or fellow worker alike.

I didn't take any photos, though. Simply because I was too lazy to take the camera out of my bag immersing myself in the happy feelings around me.

After brunch I went off to Jonker street to walk around and pretend to be a tourist :P. One of my favourite pastimes, pretending to be a tourist. Haha. Because I was in lazy cheatable mood, I didn't want to mess around with editing and overexposed shots, so I set Chewwy to Lomo mode and went a-snip-snap :D.

Chewwy is beautifully non fussy and easy to use on a hot day. And the darkened lomo effect works well with the otherwise harsh, sunny photos, I think.

After that I made my way to DP where I met with the Shi Yea and we went a-shopping. Shopping in Melaka seems a bit dull, after the glamour and variety of the city, but it's still fun because all the places are homey and familiar :D. I still managed to get some articles of clothing at bargain prices, so that is always nice, isn't it?

How's the semester break treating you hardworked-out fellas? Hope the days are now filled with lots of sleep, good food, and chill out times!

Polka dotted artsy dinner movie!

A.k.a I've run out of interesting blog post titles =P. Bear with me, I'll get back into the swing of things soon.

 Hello everybody :D. I'm back on this side of the country, and ye gods it's hot T_T. It's hot everywhere,  but Melaka just seems to have spongier properties, the way it soaks up all the heat and humidity. Oh well. The price to pay for living in a country that has an unbeatable variety of good food.

I got Chewwy back, yay! Charged her up well in time for dinner with my sister. She took me to a cafe near Jonker whose name I can't remember. Lol. All I know it specializes in 13 states coffee, but that's not the name of the place. 

 The cafe was beautiful though. It's cosy with warm lights and painted wooden furniture. And hanging overhead were a dozen mini disco balls. So pretty! They also have a lot of kitsch decorations strewn about the place, making it look both artistic and casual.

Love the quirky signboard! And the converted retro telly-cum-aquarium. Very clever! Not only that, they also have shelves full of old knick knacks and relics from the past, like washbasins and kettles and whatnot. And lots of coffee jars and cans because that's what they're all about.

I especially liked this particular wall because it was so colourful! And the canvas paintings are just perfect on it. It reminds of something out of a Jimmy Liao artbook:

The cafe has a really nice weekday dinner set: for under rm30 you can get main course with soup, drink and a custard dessert. My sister and I both had mushroom soup:

And I had salmon with teriyaki sauce while my sister had chicken with mushroom gravy. The mash was garlicky soft and very delicious. Both main courses had a side of boiled vegetables and cucumber and tomato slices.

And dessert was custard in shot glasses! My sister had chocolate oreo, mine was strawberry. So yummy! One was bitter and the other was sweet-sour; both were perfect together. The shot glasses were small, but the miniature portion was just the right amount to end the meal.

We went for Madagascar 3 after that and...well. Haven't laughed that much in a long while. That much and that loudly. But the movie really was that entertaining and hilarious; everyone in the audience were in stitches. The odd thing about it is that after the movie I barely have any recollection of what I was laughing about .___. Strange but true. Not that I mind watching it another time. I would, and this time I'd watch it in 3D 8D.

Strawberry Mob

These shoes by Vans  just screams adorable. I saw it on sale in Mid Valley yesterday and all I could do was go 'OH NOES I HAVE TO SAVE DON'T TEMPT ME SALES NOOOOO X.X'. Lol. It was RM199 with 40% off so...yeah. Still pretty expensive. I wonder if it'll still be available when they start putting up the 70% off tags, haha =P. 

But, really! It's so purdy!!! XD. Look at the adorable little red and green spots on the off-white canvas! It reminds me exactly of a dish of strawberries and cream ^O^. And the pretty neutral colours mean that it'd be great with almost everything, from jeans to a light cotton dress. Something casual with a just enough berrylicous twist to it. They are also very comfortable; it felt snug and a bit padded, unlike the stiff, flat feeling you sometimes get with plimsolls. I tried the one on display (it was my size! Oh God the temptation! XD) and I fell in love with the feeling of it on my foot, seriously. Haha. 

I'll prolly just have to add this to my wishlist, because May is the month where I solemnly swear I shall not spend on any unnecessary items. Which seems to me awfully hard because apparently May is the time of mega sales and final assignments. I have a bad feeling I'm going to go broke simply by printing and whatnot. At least I have a semi-full larder, so I needn't be to worried about starving. 

Starving. Haha. Yeah, right Joanne. The day you starve is the day you decide to go on a diet XD. 

Anyway, it may interest you that Esmond got me into listening to this awesome Dubstep trio called The Glitch Mob. 

The Glitch Mob

I don't know why it took me so long to blog about them, haha. It's been a long while since I've come across an album that pleases me almost 99%. Somehow their musical style comes off as unique to me. Because most of the time when I listen to Dubstep I can't tell one track apart from the other. Listening to Glitch Mob I visualize each track as individual droplets of carefully crafted jewels (wow, did I just overdo the imagery? =P). Wonderful melodies with something that feels almost cinematic, like what you'd expect from a blockbuster soundtrack. I was surprised that I could be so impressed with a Dubstep album, really.
*Edit: Esmond has corrected me to say that The Glitch Mob is not actually a Dubstep trio, but a glitch group. As their name implies, lol. I guess I can't quite tell the difference as I generalize the lot into electronic music. Which I shouldn't. I know that now. Amitābbha.

Oh, and did I mention just HOW awesome The Glitch Mob are? They have selected tracks on their website up for FREE download. Their latest is a half hour mixtape that features big names like Jay Z, Lil Wayne and Daft Punk. I can't think of anything but respect for them, yo. And to maybe purchase their next album when it comes out 8D.

I'm not sure how many of you have heard of their music, but there's no harm trying them out, especially if you're a Dubstep fan. One of their remixes was featured in the DMC: Devil May Cry trailer. Which reminds me that I have not rambled about my excitement of the game XD. Stay tuned for that!

Weather's awfully sunny. Time to work hard at being productive! What are your plans for the weekend? Hyped up for the Mother's Day celebration? Unfortunately I can't be home for that, but I hope everyone else will have a good time celebrating with their mothers this weekend =).

Simply Delicious

Avenged Sevenfold

It was crazy. That's all I can say about it. Okay, well not ALL I can say about it, but if I had to use just one word to summarize the entire night, crazy is about the best word in all of language-dom that could describe it =P.

Can you believe it I brought my darn camera and yet once they started playing all I could do was shove my camera back into my bag and hang on for dear life. It was all I did not expect and more. The insane heat! Malaysia at its very worse. Hot, balmy night with occasional short puffs of breeze. Then the crowd. It was like. I don't know. Sardines? Vacuum packed peanuts? Something like that. So imagine a hundred truckloads of vacuum packed peanuts in a microwave. And then imagine the peanuts going crazy and popping about and turning into popcorn (I know that popcorn is very technically made from corn kernels, but right now is no time to be choosy with similes =P). 

That was later in the night though. At the beginning of the day I still had time to wander about online and lunch on nasi paprik and take photos at the bus stop and places on the way to the venue:

Look at the crowd! And this is only waiting to enter, at around 6-ish. We were in line at 5-ish, and the crowd just grew and grew.

 Game faces on, yo! Though honestly speaking I was mostly quiet up to the opening act because I wanted to conserve energy. I should thank Akito-sama I did, because after that it took all the energy in me to stay alive. 

I was certainly not dressed for the rocker scene, though (Sarah was absolutely impressive in her all black garb and leather bomber jacket). I was more dressed for the weather in my L4D shirt (v2.0!) and denim shorts. Thank gawd tho. I've never had my shirt COMPLETELY soaked in sweat until I could have literally wrung the sweat out of it. As mentioned, I did not take a single photo/video of the performance, simply because I had no chance to. I only managed to get a shot of the stage before the crowds came in:

And then after the night back in Desa we had a mini group shot, a bunch of tired, rocked out peepers:

I felt like the concert was a twee bit too short. Maybe because everything was just a non stop action-packed sweaty mob-filled rockgasm. I think there were more cons than pros to my experience, but hell. I saw and heard Avenged Sevenfold. Completely worth it. And it was certainly a one of a kind experience. Made me appreciate life, fresh air and cold showers a whole lot more 8D.

Lunch Break

Haha, I love looking at food when I'm hungry. It makes my tummy rumble and my mouth water even more. And then I enjoy my next meal more than I could ever imagine possible XD.

So last Monday Esmond and I went to Street Mall to satisfy my lust for spicy Indian food. We went to the Indian restaurant over there (can't remember the name) and man, it was surprisingly good! We weren't quite sure about portion sizes, but we were glad we agreed to split the order when the food came. 

We had mutton biryani and a potato naan:

The biryani comes with a side of cucumber raita and curry- yummy!!! It was deliciously spicy, and the mutton was very tender. The fried egg on top came as a surprise, lol. Wasn't expecting it at all. The naan had mashed potato and spices inside. Super yummy! But really filling; I don't think I would be able to manage it on my own. 

The restaurant had probably one of the most impressive menus I've seen in a restaurant as small as it was. The photography was impressive! I did not take any photos but I certainly will the next time I go. And I will most definitely go again, for the food and its prices! The individual prices are not exactly cheap, but what surprised me was that there was no tax. The bill, when it came, was a happy surprise for my wallet and I :D.

Birdy Out of Cage

I'm going to be blogging from the previous weeks of April when you never saw my face around here. You've been warned. XD.

So I'm sure all of you remembered the fancy times when I ranted like an enrage warthog about being stuck in two places for extended periods of time. On the second weekend of April after much hard work and submission of assignments, Esmond and I went out on a two day shopping spree! Not that we bought much, really. But it was pure bliss to be finally out and looking at fresh new things. It was unfortunate that I was suffering from an awful sore throat and cough, but I enjoyed myself nevertheless. 

Thursday night was not short of excitement, though XD. After a day from mock presentation and submissions I came back from dinner with Esmond and his famileh tired and sore. I opened my cupboard to take things and put things in, and so brain dead was I that I did not notice one whit that I had a new occupant in the cupboard. Until Esmond flung the cupboard doors open dramatically at the last moment and pointed it out. And even then it took me a while to register.

Moral of the story: You do not try to surprise Joanne when she's brain dead. You will be sorely disappointed.

He's big, fat, and oh so huggable.

So fat I can barely put my arms around him when I sleep, but he's perfect as a tummy-warmer and for resting your chin on ^O^. Probably the nicest surprise I've had in a long while ^O^.

On Friday we went to Sunway for ramen and shopping. I think Ichiban Ramen has the tastiest ramen around. I love the broth, though it does smell a tad weird >w<.

 After walking round and round and going into countless shops we had tea at Krispy Kremes! The new attendant there was so nice and helpful. Talk about service with a smile :D.

I was quite prepared to go crazy and shop like mad but I ended up only buying two skirts on sale (30rm for two! Any awesomer and it'd be free 8D), one of which I wore the very next day to Pavilion. On a side note, it seems to me that I have this awfully big smile on my face all the time. But I had that annoying hoarse voice and cough. It's funny that I look so normal when I was dying inside XD.

Saw this adorable big yellow thing in Isetan, KLCC! Part of a mochi promotion. The melon flavoured mochi sample I got was yummy ^O^.

Esmond and I took the new walkway from KLCC to Pavilion after. It didn't feel quite so far compared to the last time I walked it. Back then it felt like it took forever to finally reach the other end .__. 

I managed to get what I wanted in Kinokuniya! The third and final installment of Howl's Moving Castle. Entitled the House of Many Ways. For some reason the imagery in my mind was a lot more dull and muted, compared to the brightness of the ones I have of Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in The Air. I need to read it a second time to polish and refine the images soon.

Anyway, there was this amazing spectacle outside Pavilion: rows and rows of Ferraris! It was some sort of gathering by the Ferrari Owner's Club, and the sight of so many beautiful cars was really something. But there's something strange when there's just so many of them gathered together. It doesn't look quite so luxurious as when it's just one car in the middle of everything. Still interesting though.

 Esmond was very colour-coordinated that day, yes.

The original intention for going to Pavilion was to visit a product exhibition at the top floor, just outside Tokyo Street. There were some pretty darn awesome ideas there. After that we went to Tokyo Street and came across this little dood:

The nights were spent hacking and coughing though D=. That cough took quite a while to cure. I'm glad it's all over now and I've got my sexy squeaky voice back XD. The week after was semester break, which I went back for a week with plans of going gangsta on the shopping. Hah. My plans were wiped away as easily as chalk off a chalkboard. I spent my waking hours sitting in front of me laptop working away on the 4-page comic that was due the week after. Then I got so mad I went 'fk this shyt' and went out to do grocery shopping on Saturday and bought 3 dresses and a pair of shoes, with enough groceries to last me a while besides. Anyway that one is done and happy, and all shall be revealed in the posts to come. And believe me there will be more.
